This research aims to analyze strategic behavior adopted by SMEs from the center of Tamaulipas in Mexico based on the typology of strategy defined by Miles and Snow (1978). It also examines whether there are differences between the type of strategy adopted and organizational performance of companies. For it, was applied the questionnaire proposed by Aragón (1996) to 84 companies SME Mexican examined the dimensions that make up the business strategy and through a clúster analysis classified the companies being obtained 28.5% adopt a reactive strategic behavior compared to 22.6% adopt an explorer behavior, 21.4% and 27.5% of companies respectively analyzer and defensive behavior. The findings indicate no significant differences between strategic behavior and business performance measured by financial variables ROI, ROA and profit margin.
