CORDERO CORDERO, María Pía. Carl Hempel's Operationalist Proposition in the Beginnings of DSM. Av. Psicol. Latinoam. [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.3, pp.571-581. ISSN 1794-4724. https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/apl/a.4154.
This work looks at operationalism and its influence on the third version of the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders based on a 1959 lecture at the American Psychopathological Association by German philosopher Carl Hempel. With reference to the operationalism of American physicist Percy W. Bridgman, who advocated the semantic reductionism of scientific concepts, Hempel presented his proposition for the conceptual description and systematization of the taxonomy of mental illnesses. In conclusion, some objections to operationalism are presented, based on criticisms that have been raised to the notion of obser vation devoid of theory.
