In terms of defense and security, South America is a region that faces a complex strategic situation which offers risks and opportunities, and because of that requires a clear framework to be understood. In an international level the development of security strategies has become more important as they are one of the main tools for countries to guide their decision making process in the field. In this regard, the purpose of this paper is in one hand analyze the main elements of the National Security Strategy of Spain (2013), and in the other hand, study the state of affairs of several Latin American countries. These in order to assist in the development of security strategies in a region that seeks to position itself as a relevant international actor.
