CAMACHO-TAUTA, Javier Fernando; MOLINA GOMEZ, Fausto Andrés y REYES ORTIZ, Óscar Javier. Preparation of Sand Specimens for Tiaxial Testing by a Controlled Tamping Method. Rev. Cient. Gen. José María Córdova [online]. 2014, vol.12, n.14, pp.185-196. ISSN 1900-6586.
One of most frequent difficulties in triaxial testing on sand is related to the method of preparation of the specimens as well as the achievement of the expected relative density for the samples of a group of triaxial test. Several authors suggest that the process of extraction and reconstitution of samples have a significant effect on the results of the triaxial test. In order to propose a controlled specimen preparation method for triaxial testing, it was developed a new equipment to apply controlled and uniform compaction energy and to provide a quick verification of the process. The new system was tested by developing a set of specimens to evaluate the repeatability of the compaction process in three types of sand. In addition, it was carried out the same process by using only the original devices of triaxial equipment for preparing these samples. The study showed that the new system has better repeatability for the three materials studied than the preview equipment.
