Cathodic arc technique was used to deposit a Cr/CrN bilayer coating on AISI 440C stainless steel. The morphology and composition of the coating were verified by Scanning Electron Microscope and X-Ray Diffraction. Hardness and adhesion of the coating were also studied. In the erosion-corrosion wear, a slurry jet with impingement angle 90° at 4 and 8 m/s was used to impact upon bare and coated steel. All the wear mechanisms were evaluated according to ASTM G-119. The results indicate that the synergism wear rate is the most aggressive wear component, exceeding 40% of the total mass loss for coating steel and 60% of mass loss for bare steel. An increase in the impact velocity increases mass loss for both bare and coated steel. In comparison, the Cr/CrN coating had better corrosion and erosion-corrosion resistance.
