Introduction: The baby's life starts before its conception, and it grows in direct relation with the surrounding environment. The first idea of a person is the body; it is within the body that the psyche sets it's roots and it becomes complex in a continuous back and forth exchange between the baby and its caregivers. Previous parental fantasies, the baby's instincts, encounters and disencounters between the baby and its mother and father, and then with other people, its needs, desires and frustrations… well, a vast number of events give shape to his psyche which, incipiently, evolves surprisingly. Objective: To show, through the observation of babies, the developmental theory, and with this correlation, to visualize the importance of being aware of happenings taking place during this period of life. Method: The study started by reviewing the structure of the self theory and continued with the object relation theory. Subsequently, this theory was materialized through direct observation of the babies and supervisions Results: The baby's development, the integration between its psyche and soma, is the result of a continuous inter-play between the inner and outer worlds, with various shades. Conclusions: The observation of babies gives a valuable opportunity to understand the healthy development, possible early etiologies of suffering, enabling timely interventions and furthermore and sensitizing us to the need of prevention.
