ANGIE LORENA, Delgado Barrera; PENAGOS THOLE, José Luis  y  BARRERA PERDOMO, María del Pilar. Metabolic syndrome prevalence in a group of inpatients in the " Carlos Lleras Restrepo Clinical " . A pilot study. rev.fac.med. [online]. 2008, vol.56, n.3, pp.211-221. ISSN 0120-0011.

Background. The growing number of individuals with metabolic syndrome (SM), especially in developing countries, generates many questions in the public health context. The metabolic syndrome has been studied for various years and has been called of different forms: resistance to insulin syndrome, quartet of the death, etc. Objective. To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in a group of adult inpatients Carlos Lleras Restrepo Clinic, according to International Diabetes Federation 2005 criteria. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional and descriptive study. 44 patients were studied, according to the inclusion criteria from march to april 2007. The data recollection was done through a personalized interview using a specially designed format. For the analysis of the results, the following was used: descriptive statistic, Pearson's and logistic regression using SPSS 14 software. Models of analysis of multiple correspondences was done, using SPAD 4.5 software. Results: The prevalence of the MS was 84 percent (n=37), mainly in men. Overweight prevailed, 59 percent (n=26). The average of waist circumference was 104.0 ± 10.1 cm , which goes over the cutting point established by the IDF (average: men 106.2 cm ; women:100.9 cm). Subjects with MS showed the following averages: c-HDL, 34.3 ± 7.7 mg/dL (average: men 32.8 mg/dL; women, 35.9 mg/dL); triglycerides, 199.1 ± 105.0 mg/dL; fasting plasma levels of glucose 139.2 ± 69.6 mg/dL; systolic blood pressure,133.4 ± 20.1 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure, 77.3 ± 15.6 mmHg. A significative statistic correlation was found between waist circumference and body mass index and nutritional status. The multivariate analysis showed that women had higher risk of MS. The risk increases when the body mass index, waist circumference and fasting plasma levels of glucose increase progressively. Conclusions. High prevalence of MS in studied group. High blood pressure prevailed in men and the low c-HDL, in women.

Palabras clave : prevalence; metabolic syndrome (MS); waist cinrcumference; cholesterol; HDL; triglycerides; blood pressure; fasting plasma levels of glucase.
