During the twentieth century, several Latin American countries have documented the efforts that were made to train the libraries’ staff and to develop them professionally so that they could respond to the complex world of information, which is fundamental in order to be able to reach an universal culture and to be able to access the achievements of science and technology that all of our peoples required. Years later, an outstanding effort was made that concluded in the creation of the Interamerican Library School. In fact, it was founded on October 19th 1956 and in its name outlined its destiny and objectives: to be an university body, within the University of Antioquia, with a Latin American vocation by training professionals for the libraries in the Region, with aspirations for modernity and with a quality syllabus that included the worlds most updated currents. This paper addresses the importance that this institution gave to its own library and its academic staff that from the beginning has been fundamental for the development of this academic institution. At the same time it highlights the work and the projection of the Revista Interamericana de Bibliotecología in the neighboring countries, as well as the contribution of international meetings and the updating of the academic exchanges for the consolidation of the Libarianship.
