Resumen

BARRIOS GIRALDO, DAVID. National Guards: Military and Everyday Life in Antioquia, 1853-1876. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2010, vol.37, n.2, pp.135-155. ISSN 0120-2456.

Recently, the study of the role of armed civilians, and particularly National Guards in the political conflicts of the nineteenth century, has attracted significant interest in the Hispanic American historians who have analyzed both the way that the new republics conceived their national sovereignty as well as the role played by the ruling classes-regional and local elites-in order to create peculiar policing orders. It is therefore necessary to address the analysis of a specific case such as Antioquia, which permits to stablish, from the description of behaviors and meanings inherent in a policing-military life, different relations of the National Guards with specific aspects of regional and local life in Colombia between 1853 and 1876. The absence of national bibliographical production determined on the priority given to the historical archives, especially the use of correspondence between individuals and the Guards with the provincial and federal government in Antioquia. This correspondence describes aspects such as the enlistment of the Guards, the uses of public and private spaces, and the role of the Guards in the social and moral order of the region.

Palabras clave : Antioquia; civil wars; nineteenth century; military life; National Guards.
