The paper traces the origins of the descriptor "Latin" for our America through the use of the term by the Catholic Church, starting out with the creation of the Colegio Pío Latino Americano of Rome, promoted by Chilean priest José Ignacio Eyzaguirre Portales under the auspices of Pope Pius IX, in the sixth decade of the 19^th century. First of all, the article includes a brief review of the evolution of the term "Latin America" and then goes on to discuss the situation of the Church and its relationship with the State. It then analyzes the specific use of the term, the personality of Eyzaguirre Portales, and the background and creation of the pontifical college. Finally, the paper discusses the trajectory of this educational institution, its influence, and the definition of "Latin American Catholic Church", together with its expressions over more than a century.
