Resumen

GUTIERREZ ARDILA, DANIEL. The Remorse of a Revolutionary: José Manuel Restrepo during the Reconquista (1816-1819). Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2013, vol.40, n.2, pp.49-76. ISSN 0120-2456.

There are few studies regarding the ruses that some of the most prominent leaders of the "New Granada interregnum" (1810-1815) resorted to in order to escape the gallows during the so-called Reconquista (Reconquest) (1816-1819). The reason is simple: many of the actions they undertook to save their lives are likely to disrupt the impeccable image of the founders of the Republic conveyed by national history. Thus, Colombian historiography has taken delight in making martyrs of a few, while keeping deliberate silence with respect to the fate of others. In analyzing the process of survival of José Manuel Restrepo, the text argues that the study of this facet of many leaders of the independence movement makes it possible to achieve a clearer understanding of their life and works. In fact, the experience of the Reconquista was truly traumatic for all of them and affected their worldview forever.
