SANCHEZ MEJIA, HUGUES R. y CONDE CALDERON, JORGE. Assignment of Privileges, State, and Public Cause: Lands and Prayer Center for the Freedmen's Settlement of Quilichao, Popayán, 1750-1810. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2019, vol.46, n.1, pp.59-83. ISSN 0120-2456. https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v46n1.75553.
On the basis of a land dispute between the inhabitants of the freedmen's settlement of Quilichao in the Governorship of Popayán and the landowner and miner, Francisco Arboleda, the article shows how the legal representatives of the former sought to have the local authorities materialize certain privileges they had been granted by the Crown. The documents in which they conveyed their requests reveal their reasoning, assumptions, expectations, and, above all, a special language that strengthened their legal demands. They evince an enlightened narrative that sought to increase privileges and framed petitions using concepts and terms such as State, public cause, and enlightened ideals regarding the strengthening of Catholic faith and agricultural productivity.
