The present article presents a detailed analysis with regards to the indication, the need, electivity and costs of the diverse laboratory exams requested by the various surgical groups. These exams are requested during preoperative evaluations of the patients, depending on the type of surgery to be practiced, his/her clinical condition, related diseases, age, risk, length and bleeding estimated during emergency situations, with the perspective of improving the perioperatory evolution. Based on the class and type of evidence published in the literature, indication, pertinence and benefits of the various laboratory exams are described. Also, ASA recommendations as well as the experience obtained from the register and the systemized observation from thousands of patients at the «Clinica Reina Sofia» are describe too. At the end, some algorithms for low risk and intermediate risk factors as well as cardiac patients are presented.
