MURILLO CARVAJAL, Felipe. The Classic Utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham: A Discussion and Historiographical Review About Utilitarianism, His Opposition to the Natural Rights Philosophy and Its Position on the Redistribution of Wealth. Prax. filos. [online]. 2022, n.55, pp.169-188. Epub 26-Sep-2022. ISSN 0120-4688. https://doi.org/10.25100/pfilosofica.v0i55.12360.
The purpose of this essay is to present and analyze the opposition than classical utilitarianism, proposed by Jeremy Bentham, represents against deontological view of the philosophy of natural rights. By these means, it will be argued that Bentham´s goal go beyond of philosophical propositions and state de need to include practical elements that allow the generation of tangible actions for most individuals.
Once the above is addressed, this essay shows that the main axiom of utilitarianism - the greatest happiness for the greatest possible number as a measure of right and wrong - requires, based on a method of quantification of pleasure and pain, the intervention of the legislator in the face of externalities and the implementation of certain wealth redistribution measures that lead to the accomplishment of the main principle: to generate the greatest possible equality and happiness.
