Resumen

PAOLI, Giovanna De. An Approach to Transcendental Subjectivity from Greek Philosophy: The Phenomenology of Husserl and Sartre in Dialogue with Antiquity. Prax. filos. [online]. 2023, n.57, e20212617.  Epub 28-Jul-2023. ISSN 0120-4688.  https://doi.org/10.25100/pfilosofica.v0i57.12617.

It is undeniable that the notion of epoché was crucial for the emergence and subsequent development of the phenomenological tradition. Although Husserl's re-signification of it is highly original, he himself stops to recognize in ancient philosophy the merit of having found the ideal way to access transcendental subjectivity. In the following paper I will seek, on the one hand, to define the epoché as it originates in the thought of the Sophists and then go on to analyze the way in which Husserl manages to reverse this notion until it becomes the preferred method that allows us to reach the transcendental sphere. On the other hand, I will continue tracing the evolution of the epoché to arrive at its abandonment in Sartre's philosophy. In relation to the latter, I am interested in asking whether existentialism disavows the suspension of judgment as inappropriate or whether it is rather a partial suppression of the phenomenological method. I propose to defend this second thesis, arguing that, actually, epoché is not a notion that is totally absent in Sartre's philosophy but that it remains valid in terms of existential anguish.
