Resumen

VISBAL, Gloria. Patients autonomy with relation to his disease. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2007, vol.23, n.2, pp.317-325. ISSN 0120-5552.

Autonomy is a modern principle in bioethics; it appears as the consequence of the concept of the human being that respects personal freedom. At this point in history where the scientific development is sharply rising, it is precise to set bases for the development of a scale of values where the respect for human dignity and the free choice of the patient in any degree of illness is implied. For professionals in the nursing area this becomes a high human and social responsibility inherent to the essence of their exercise of ensuring decision making abilities in people, and the right to have their will respected in every moment including those that are critical in their lives. However, although the systems say otherwise it is precise to work in favour of autonomy and autodetermination of the human being respecting their rights. This requires that educational processes, teachers and students work as a group in values, principles and ethical attitudes that facilitate the offered care, and from this perspective to take into account the patient's decision making freedom.

Palabras clave : Autonomy; bioethics; nursing; care; pacients decisión.
