SERPA, Malvin; CASTILLO, Omar y RODRIGUEZ, Luis Felipe. Economic analysis of yellow maize production in the mid and lower Sinu valley in the Córdoba department. Agron. colomb. [online]. 2005, vol.23, n.2, pp.334-341. ISSN 0120-9965.
Yellow maize (Zea mays) production in the mid and lower Sinú valley in Córdoba (Colombia) was evaluated using information collected from a survey of 1,417 growers during the first six months of 2001. The results revealed that the highest production came from middle- and large-scale growers; however, according to minimal cost analysis, the smaller growers were economically more efficient compared to the former. Statistical and econometrical evaluation showed that maize production in Cordoba shows decreasing returns to scale. Analysing marginal cost productivity revealed the advisability of reducing total costs, specifically on seeds and pest control; however, weed control should be increased.
