RINCON, Álvaro H.; CASTRO, Hugo E. y GOMEZ, Manuel I.. Physical characterization of acid sulfate soils from the irrigation district of Alto Chicamocha (Boyaca) and its application to soil management. Agron. colomb. [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.1, pp.134-145. ISSN 0120-9965.
The physical properties of Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS) from the irrigation district of Alto Chicamocha were evaluated in order to determine soil physical limitants, their relationship with chemical properties and, when being identified, establish the proper management for irrigation, drainage, and tillage. In order to achieve this goal, an Interinstitutional Group for Investigation on ASS (GISSAT) of the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia conducted a soil survey to identify, describe, and classify systematically five soil profiles by determining real and bulk densities, porosity, particle size distribution, structural stability, consistency, rupture module, moisture constants, and hydraulic conductivity in the upper horizons. The must relevant results show that ASS are limited by high plasticity, moderate or low structural stability in organic horizons, high clay contents in mineral horizons, which as a whole influence the pore distribution, moisture retention, and soil aeration. Furthermore these soils present shallow rooting depths due to the presence of sulfuric horizons and high water tables, the situation that allows establishing practices of physical management of ASS in order to recuperate them and obtain a sustainable usage.
