Resumen

REVELO VARGAS, Danilo Andrés; PEREZ RODRIGUEZ, Erick Daniel  y  MAYA ROSERO, Manuel David. Evaluation of eggshells selective adsorption capacity against sulfur compounds for purification of drinking water. rev. cienc. [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.2, pp.77-85. ISSN 0121-1935.  https://doi.org/10.25100/rc.v23i2.8423.

The retention capacity of sulfur compounds was evaluated through the use of biological linear filters made from eggshells, in order to develop a water purification mechanism in a contamination risk area with sulfur derivatives from geological origin. Initially the eggshells were adequate and standardized under conditions of 200µm, 400µm and 800µm diameter to evaluate against methylene blue and copper sulfate in a linear filter model at controlled conditions. The results showed that the adaptation to 200 µm diameter particles significantly increased the relationship of contact area with respect to the volume of the particle, representing a better selective adsorption capacity for this type of compounds (0.062920 mg L-1); however, the adsorption rate was the lowest determined (0.25759 L-1) due to the reduction of the water flow rate. Under these conditions it was determined that a filter of 50g of 200µm particles could be used until it is saturated with a volume of 804 L of water in the area of interest, and subsequently replaced by a filter with new eggshell particles.
