SANANDRES, Eliana y OTALORA MONTENEGRO, Juan Sebastián. Application of topic modeling for Trauma Studies: The case of Chevron in Ecuador. Investig. desarro. [online]. 2015, vol.23, n.2, pp.228-255. ISSN 0121-3261. https://doi.org/10.14482/indes.23.2.6810.
The traditional perspectives on trauma studies have understood traumatic events as naturally existing. By the end of the 1990s a group of cultural sociologists started to develop a new perspective, which they refer to as the Cultural Trauma Theory. This perspective suggests that inherently traumatic events do not exist and that trauma, instead, results from a socio-cultural process by virtue of which actors decide to represent some events as fundamental threats to their collective identity. However, the analysis of such representations involves the methodological challenge of working qualitatively with large amounts of data. In this paper we introduce Topic Modeling for solving this challenge by addressing the emergence of the trauma process resulting from the Chevron-Texaco case in Ecuador.
