Objective:
to analyze the child growth and development assessment in nursing consultation.
Methodology:
descriptive study with qualitative approach. The study involved four nurses who performed nursing consultation with children in a programmatic manner in family health units of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Data were collected through participant observation of 21 nursing consultations from January to February 2012 and they were analyzed using the content analysis method.
Results:
on the basis of data analysis, emerged the following two categories: Child growth assessment in nursing consultation, and Child development assessment in nursing consultation. Nurses assessed the child growth in all of the consultations, using curves contained within the Personal Child Health Record (PCHR). Nevertheless, child development was assessed only in part in most consultations considered.
Conclusion:
the most significant features of the nursing consultations are the growth and development assessment in all of them, and the use of PCHR both as a guiding tool for mothers and a monitoring strategy for child growth and development.
