Concerns about the sustainability of development processes have increased in recent years as well as the definition of sustainability indicators. In Chile, these matters have been principally connected with environmental dimension and urban sectors. However, faced to profound transformations of rural areas today, concerns about the sustainability of rural areas and small farming practices have also increased. This article presents a system of sustainability indicators for rural areas with special emphasis in the social dimension. This system of indicators was built using to methodology that combined qualitative and quantitative approximations and suitable for the local level. The proposal was designed around five dimensions, subjects and indicators and was applied in a rural community in Central Chile.
