TORRES., Rodrigo Alejandro De la O. The Yucatan Coast and the Phenomenon of Piracy. Conformation and Perception of Space, Sixteenth Century. Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.1, pp.105-137. Epub 01-Mar-2019. ISSN 0122-2066. https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v24n1-2019005.
The paper aims to analyse, by highlighting the spatial dimension, the phenomenon of piracy in Yucatan during the sixteenth century. The activity of French and English corsairs in the Yucatan coasts constituted a historical geography. In order to verify the above, it was considered two spatial aspects: a) describing the location and spatial distribution of French and English navigators actions in the long peninsular coastal strip, and b) accounting for the perception around Yucatan space derived from the fear of corsairs. By means of these routes it is possible to observe the social production of the coastal space as a first-order sphere in the history of the phenomenon in Yucatan. It is affirmed, therefore, that the phenomenon of piracy was a component, which gave sense to Yucatan in the sixteenth century.
