PRADO ARELLANO, Luis Ervin. «Seducing», «Corrupting» and «Demoralizing». Representations of Rebel Women Made by the Provincial Authorities of Popayan (1841-1842). Mem. Soc. [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.40, pp.121-132. ISSN 0122-5197. https://doi.org/10.11144/Javeriana.mys20-40.scdr.
The purpose of this article is to show the representation that civil and military authorities of the Popayan province made of women who openly took part in the public sphere, showing their sympathies for the rebel side. We take the case of the months after the civil War of the Supremes (July 1841 onwards), a period characterized by the repression carried out by representatives of the State against individuals who openly took part in the rebellion. In this context, many women were expelled from the city, town, or province - without being found guilty in court - by considering that due to their acts of sedition and sympathy for the rebels they corrupted and demoralized the social body.
