Resumen

CALDERON, Alfonso; RODRIGUEZ, Virginia  y  TABORDA, Rodrigo. IMPLEMENTATION OF INTRAMAMMARY ANTIBIOTIC ASSOCIATION TO DRY-OFF AS CONTROL OF BOVINE MASTITIS IN DOUBLE PURPOSE SYSTEMS. rev.udcaactual.divulg.cient. [online]. 2010, vol.13, n.1, pp.49-56. ISSN 0123-4226.

The dry cow therapy consists in the application of antibiotics at the lactation ending to eliminate the infection agents. The objective of this clinical study was to evaluate the result of cloxacillin plus ampicilin application during the dry period and its efficacy in the control of infections at the beginning of the next lactation in a double purpose system in the municipality of Planeta Rica (Cordoba, Colombia). At the drying off day, 50 cows were divided at random into two experimental groups and one milk sample of 10mL, using sterile labeled tube, was collected before disinfection of the cows teat tip. Then, the experimental group received 700mg of benzatinic cloxacilina and 350mg of ampicillin clorhidrate by means of intra-mammary infusion. The control group did not receive any antibiotics. Cows were sampled for a second time seven days after calving and bacteriological cultures were executed. During the dry period, 37% of the quarters of the experimental group and 30% of the control group were positive for any microorganism. The bacteriological culture made at the beginning of the new lactation period was, for the experimental group 2% and, for the control group 26%. The Odds Ratio (OR) of the treatment group was 0.020 and of the control group was 0.3515. The minor probability of the experimental group to present infected quarters is attributed to the antibiotic association of cloxacillin and ampicillin applied at the termination of lactation.

Palabras clave : Dry cow therapy; mastitis; double purpose.
