Resumen

CHAGAS-MOREIRA, Marléa et al. Nursing Support Strategies in the Care of Cancer Patients: Expectations Found among the Residents of a Brazilian Community. Aquichan [online]. 2010, vol.10, n.2, pp.132-145. ISSN 1657-5997.

Objective: The objective was to describe the priorities set by residents of a community in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) concerning support strategies for patients with cancer and to analyze the indications for planning nursing action based on those expectations. Method: The frame of reference is based on the Innovative Care for Chronic Health Framework (World Health Organization) and on the systemic guidelines for health. This is a qualitative, descriptive study that used semi-structured interviews for data collection. Results: Most of those interviewed said they expected support in the form of information on changes in lifestyle for patients with cancer (i.e. self-care and help to reduce the stigma of the disease). Those who reported knowing someone with cancer voiced the need for emotional support and for help to avoid abandoning treatment. They also stressed the importance of making room for patients and their families to share experiences. Conclusions: The results point to the necessity of establishing a plan for nursing action within the community that encourages grassroots participation in laying out strategies, in helping to raise awareness, in motivating patients with cancer to deal with self-care and in encouraging a better quality of life.
