Pensam. psicol. [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.2, pp.65-82. ISSN 1657-8961.
This article traces the connections between Psychology and health in Brazil, from a constructionist point of view. It focuses initially on pioneer efforts that opened up opportunities for psychological practices in health institutions, which led to the organization of associations, creation of journals and of specialization courses that also set the scene for the diversity of approaches and psychological practices in the health arena. Subsequently, the recognition of Psychology as a health profession by professional and governmental bodies that regulate professional practices is discussed. The account then proceeds to focus on the reorganization of health services in Brazil -which led to the creation of the Unified Health System (SUS)- and its impact on the practices, work opportunities and training of psychologists. These events resulted in the increasing presence of psychologists in public health services, also, in that there are many challenges to be met in order to ensure that psychological knowledge and practices will be better articulated with the health needs of the population and to the SUS guiding principles.
