Controlled release of Metoprolol Succinate from the organo-mineral complex Metoprolol Succinate-Montmorillonite. Iteckne [online]. 2022, vol.19, n.1, pp.69-78. Epub 09-Sep-2022. Due to the current need to prolong the action of a drug and reduce the side effects generated in the patient, scientific studies have increased in the search for systems that give rise to the controlled release of drugs.
This research work shows the study of the release kinetics of the drug Metoprolol Succinate in vitro from the synthesis of the organo-mineral complex Metoprolol Succinate (MPS)-montmorillonite (MMT) at pH 8. This study determined the presence of the drug in the interlaminar space of the aluminosilicate from the X-ray diffraction technique of polycrystalline samples and other complementary spectroscopic analytical techniques, obtaining as a result that the introduction of Metoprolol Succinate in montmorillonite was due to the interactions of hydrogen bonds and ion-dipole and also a 60% encapsulation efficiency was achieved. Finally, the kinetic study for drug release shows that the model that best adapted to the data obtained from the release in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) was the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, and in the case of simulated intestinal fluid (SIF), it was observed that it is more suitable to kinetics with a first-order model.
