Resumen
RUIZ MOSCARDO, Javier. The greatest understanding for the greatest number: Noël Carroll’s approach to “mass art”. Rev. Guillermo Ockham [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.1, pp.37-44. Epub 28-Jul-2021. ISSN 1794-192X. https://doi.org/10.21500/22563202.3581.
This paper aims to expose the main lines of Noël Carroll’s theory of mass art. The originality of his proposal is that, unlike most thinkers who have approached this phenomenon, our philosopher seeks a purely descriptive theory that rejects any kind of valuation of its object of study, limiting itself to offer a conceptual framework capable of classifying the artistic expressions of mass society. As a complement, we will try to contextualize his proposal by presenting the basis of the debate through the ideas of Clement Greenberng and Dwight MacDonald, the main founders of the topic. Finally, we will conclude with some materials for the criticism of Carroll’s position.
