This article reports an overview of the most significant theoretical findings from research on the understanding of the place value of digits in children. It is proposed a discussion that characterizes and defines the object of study mentioned, describes the skills and cognitive demands related to their understanding, and identifies the most common types of tools used for assessment, diagnosis and intervention, as well as the analysis of some theoretical models that explain the development of understanding of the place value. The reviewed studies suggest that understanding of the place value implies the acquisition of specific conceptual and procedural struc tures, affecting children’s performance in mathematics and writing Arabic numbers. Currently, the research tries to unravel the place value as numerical processing of how this principle occurs in multi-digit numbers.
