The essay presents an overview of the work of the Mexican painter María Izquierdo (1902-1955) and situates her images and ideas within the debates about the role of art in Mexico in the 1930s and 1940s. During the first decade of her career, she was loosely affiliated with the vanguard literary group known as the Contemporáneos (Contemporaries), who advocated pure art. After 1939 she changed the style and themes of her work in ways that celebrated mexicanidad (the affirmation of Mexican culture), thus bringing it closer to some - but not all - of the ideas advocated by the muralists and other artists who shared their agenda. Throughout her career Izquierdo created images that addressed gender issues and promoted a positive presence of women. Izquierdo’s depictions of female protagonists stand in marked contrast to those of the muralists who usually represented women in secondary roles.
