The purpose of this article is to inform about the economic, cultural and political context of the Caribbean region of Colombia during the years when the accordion appeared and began to consolidate as the main instrument of "la cumbiamba" and "el vallenato". For the purposes of this study, the Magdalena Grande region, currently the departments of Cesar, La Guajira and Magdalena, has been taken as a geographical delimitation during the period between the decades of 1870 and 1960. By the end of the sixties of the 19th Century, statistics were recorded with detailed information on imports and exports, countries of origin or destination of the products, port or customs office of entry, quantity in kilograms, among other aspects. "La cumbiamba" will evolve into "el merengue" of the 1930s, and later on into "el vallenato" in the mid20th Century.
