SANTOS DELGADO, Adriana. Conflicts and mediations in the parishes of the diocese of Santa Marta during the second half of the igth century. memorias [online]. 2021, n.44, pp.119-141. Epub 07-Dic-2021. ISSN 1794-8886. https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.44.986.116.
This text explores the parochial world of one of the ecclesiastical jurisdictions of the Colombian Caribbean in the second half of the 19th century. The aim is to study the ways in which the priests of the diocese of Santa Marta acted in the local sphere, during a period characterized by the search for institutional consolidation of the Church, and by the need for the Catholic corporation to respond to the secularizing reforms of the liberal governments. Specifically, it is interesting to examine the participation of the clergy in the social and political dynamics of the communities where they exercised their ministerial work. It is suggested that religious officers developed particular forms of intervention within the contexts of each parish and its various modes of relationship with the different members of the congregations under their charge. The approach to these issues is based on the analysis of the experience of the priest Juan Bautista Baldetaro during his time in various localities. The monitoring of his performance reveals the protagonism of the priests in the social scene, and the complexity of the interactions between the clergy, the parishioners, the state agents, and the ecclesiastical authorities.
