HERNANDEZ LUCO, DIAWIS. A comparative approach to the legal freedom of slaves in Cartagena and Mompox during the second half of the 18th century. memorias [online]. 2022, n.48, pp.1-. Epub 09-Nov-2023. ISSN 1794-8886. https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.48.123.664.
This article studies the quantitative behavior of the legal freedom of male and female slaves in Cartagena and Mompox during the second half of the 18th century. Based on 39 cases of freedom taken from the General Archive of the Nation / Colombia, AGN (whose tabulation and systematization in excel yielded dynamic graphs around three variables: freedoms per year, typologies and correspondence with the sex of the slaves), we carried out a comparative analysis that identifies common elements in the access to freedom between both cities. Specifically, we found a higher percentage of freedoms due to judicial demand, above the funny and purchase and, a main parti- cipation of the slaves in said lawsuits, who also litigated for the freedom of their children and relatives. With this, our hypothesis raises actions undertaken by the slaves themselves to fight for their freedom, by combining legal resources with actions marked by their experiences of life in slavery. For this, we review the study period in light of the context of socio-political changes and redefinition in the master-slave relationship; We analyze the percentages of the types of freedom and identify the main actions of the slaves who litigated freedom to confront their defendants.
