This article presents the findings of the most commonly used techniques for measuring intergenerational educational mobility and discusses empirical evidence available about Latin America and Colombia as of 2012. The scientific bibliographic research process entailed checking sociology, economics, and education journals, databases (JSTOR, EBSCOhost, Redalyc, and Scielo), and other information reservoirs. The findings indicate that there is no consensus about measurements, but the most common methods are transition matrices, Markov models, and synthetic indices. Evidence shows that absolute mobility has improved in Latin America. Relative mobility, however, is low in comparison with that of developed countries. The links between the educational level of parents and that of their children continue to be extremely strong both in Latin America and Colombia.
