Various authors have used the diversionary theory of war or the scapegoat hypothesis in order to explain the international war as a response from a leader who has the aim of distracting internal issues. In this paper there are showed the main tenets of this theory with the purpose of stressing its strengths and weaknesses, attempting to redefine the theory to be applicable to Latin America. This proposal will be further developed in the framework of the research Diversionary theory for the populist style leaders in Latin America.
