Resumen

MORENO, José David. MILITARY DOCTRINE AND EXERCISE OF POWER IN LATIN AMERICA: THE ROLE AND IMPACT OF THE PERUVIAN AND BRAZILIAN MILITARY ACADEMIES ABSTRACT. rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2012, vol.7, n.1, pp.193-209. ISSN 1909-3063.

This paper aims to be an analysis on a special institution: the Military Academies for Officers. Considering these as the origin and core of thought and military doctrine, these institutions became strategic thought centers, and for countries like Peru and Brazil, they will form very professional officers. On the other hand, beyond military sciences, those schools participated in the fields of politics, law and social sciences. Consequently, graduate officers were not simple soldiers but they were officers with broad critical posture towards State and society. The hypothesis of this paper is that the high level of military professionalism had a strong impact on the political life of Brazil and Peru. The military governments of 1964 in Brazil and 1968 in Peru were influenced by those generations of officers graduated from prestigious and demanding military academies.

Palabras clave : military academies; military doctrine; Latin America; politics; military professionalism; military governments.
