The author studies the impact made by the creation and operation of the Petrochemical Complex of Bahía Blanca (Argentina) on its local environment. He reviews its regional, organizational, and economic history since the seventies, when its establishment started to be considered. He continues with its complicated commissioning. Then, he analyses the different conversion process that were implemented to achieve the important productive progress that the pole currently enjoys. The author also presents some theoretical assumptions that guided the research on space economy problems. Finally, he articulates economic theory to history analysis, with the aim of establishing how far the process of local development of Bahía Blanca has progressed due to the performance of this enormous industrial complex over the past years.
