PEDROZA CORREA, Esteban; GOMEZ VELASQUEZ, Santiago; QUIROS VELEZ, María Alejandra y MATTA HERRERA, Jorge Alejandro. Juvenile homicide in Medellín: trends and spatial autocorrelation, 2012 to 2019. Rev. logos cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2021, vol.13, n.3, pp.57-69. Epub 23-Nov-2021. ISSN 2145-594X. https://doi.org/10.22335/rlct.v13i3.1450.
This study seeks to contribute to the field of urban violence research by understanding juvenile homicide in Medellin from a quantitative methodology, determining the trends and behavior of specific juvenile homicide rates through a descriptive study with historical data collection. With figures obtained from the Mayor's Office of Medellin, the trends of specific youth homicide rates between 2012 and 2019 are determined by communes (rural and urban), age ranges and sex, as well as an exploratory analysis to check whether the rates are spatially autocorrelated for each of the years of the period studied. The trend of the total crude rate of juvenile homicide (15 to 29 years old) was decreasing throughout the period 2012 to 2019, however, two different trend periods were identified, the first, between 2012 and 2015, and the second between 2015 and 2019. When disaggregating the juvenile homicide rate by sex, heterogeneous behavior was observed, where female homicide did not present significant trends in the period considered. With respect to spatial analysis, no spatial autocorrelation was found between homicides rates, either overall or disaggregated by sex, for the period studied.
