This reflection article seeks to analyze advance directives, also known as living wills, from a legal perspective. To do so, the article addresses their conception, historical evolution, and analyzes the most emblematic cases in the international context, such as the cases of Karen Ann Quinlan, Nancy Cruzan, Geertruida Postma, and Vincent Lambert, in which living wills have played an important role. Additionally, it looks at advance directives in the international context, and, finally, shows the applicable laws in Colombia, such that it determines and reveals the main characteristics, the requirements for validity, and their effectiveness in the Colombian legal system and their applicability.
