Resumen

RODRIGUEZ-MEDINA, Carmen Lilia et al. Characterization of inspiratory and expiratory maximal pressure measures in healthy young adults living in Bogotá, D.C.. rev.fac.med. [online]. 2016, vol.64, n.1, pp.53-58. ISSN 0120-0011.  https://doi.org/10.15446/revfacmed.v64n1.47089.

Background. Reference values that have more acceptation worldwide for MIP and MEP are the ones proposed by Black and Hyatt (1), where the PIM for males is 115 ± 27 cmH2O, with a 25% inferior value in women, while the reported MEP is 100-150 cm H2O. The study of Harik-Khan was also found, where men presented measures 30% higher than those of women: 101 and 72 cmH2O, respectively. Regarding Colombian population the research of Gil was found, where the MIP and MEP average values were 75 ± 27 cmH20 and 96.4 ± 36 cmH20, with higher measures in men. However, concerning Colombian population it is necessary to expand research in this field, as well as to establish predictive equations and, thus, extrapolate these findings for health prevention and pulmonary rehabilitation. Objective. To determine respiratory muscle strength in the Bogota's population between 15 and 35 years old by measuring the MIP directly and the MEP indirectly by setting the prediction equation with anthropometric variables. Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional study with a descriptive and exploratory research was carried out.Body mass index (BMI) and Thoracic excursions were measured. MIP and MEP direct measurementwas performed with the digital pneumotachometer Dwyer,477Series. Results. 163 people between 15 and 35 years participated in this study, the BMI average value was 105.67 ± 21.88 cmH2O with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% of P (102,30 ≤ X ̅≤ 109,06)=1-α. MEP average value was 108.72 ± 26.41 cmH2O with a CI of P (104,64≤ X ̅≤ 112,81). Both averages were higher in men. Conclusion. The obtained values in this research are lower than those reported by Black &Hyatt (1), probably due to the fact that physical constitution of Colombian population is different. The best predictive model depended on the gender and BMI variables.
