CAMARGO FIGUERA, Fabio Alberto; LATORRE LATORRE, José Fidel y PORRAS CARRENO, Johanna Andrea. FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH DISCONTINUATION OF EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING. Hacia promoc. Salud [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.1, pp.56-72. ISSN 0121-7577.
Introduction: breastfeeding (BF) is one of the factors which contributes the most with health and the feeding of children, especially if it is offered in exclusive form until the sixth month. Objective: To determine the rate of discontinuation of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and the factors associated in Bucaramanga. Methodology: Study of nonrecurring cohort with births occurring between January and August 2006 in the city of Bucaramanga, chosen at random. A survival analysis was carried out. Results: rate of incidence of EBF discontinuation 362.6 (IC 95% 315.5 - 416.8) per every 1000 month-person of follow-up. The following factors were associated to the EBF discontinuation: deficient knowledge about BF, the use of baby bottles, the low socioeconomic stratum, and the information received during the hospital stay. Conclusions: a high incidence of EBF discontinuation during the first six months was presented, identifying some associated factors to the discontinuation which allow the determination of vulnerable population for possible intervention.
