Objective: To describe changes in self-care practices of nursing students at Colombian universities during professional training. Materials and Methods: A correlational descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative approach study was conducted; n = 487 nursing students from 8 Colombian universities. A survey was designed to collect information on sociodemographic variables, protective practices and health risks acquired before or during the career or modified during professional training, which was applied through Google Drive with prior informed consent. Results: The protective practices present at the time of entering to the university were: hygiene and personal care 84.8%, skin care 50%, and attendance to health promotion programs and disease prevention 39.2%. Preventive practices in the exercise of sexuality and social life skills showed positive changes in 32.4% and 47.84% respectively. The practices frequently interrupted and abandoned were: physical activity 76.2% and recreation and leisure time 65.2%. Eating patterns had negative changes in 22.8%. Among those who consumed energy drinks, increased by 13%, and 50.9% self-medicate. Conclusions: The training process positively affects attendance to health promotion and disease prevention programs, skin care, life skills and exercise of sexuality, and affects negatively physical activity and recreation and leisure time, eating patterns, consumption of energy drinks and self-medication.
