The clothing industry is regarded as one of the most important productive activities in the world, representing 30% of world production. Differences in the competitiveness of different manufacturing locations determine who gets what in this lucrative market. Objective: To identify the relationship between the Chinese manufacturing sector with the same sector in Colombia during the period 2000 to 2008. Methodology: A comparison based on the Global Competitiveness Index. Frame of reference: The apparel industry is representative within the manufacturing sector of world system; it has started to experience major changes as the increased presence and participation of China in the international market due to entry of this country to the World Trade Organization. The results show that China has a competitive advantage in exporting apparel to the world vis-a-vis Colombia. However, Colombia has the advantage in the development of differentiated products.
