CEBALLOS, WILSON FERNANDO; GOMEZ, ADOLFO LEÓN y CORONADO, JOHN JAIRO. FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF SAE 4140 STEEL WITH HIGH SURFACE ROUGHNESS IN A CORROSIVE ENVIRONMENT. Dyna rev.fac.nac.minas [online]. 2010, vol.77, n.162, pp.125-135. ISSN 0012-7353.
The fatigue behavior of SAE 4140 steel in different treatments is reported in this paper. Four treatments were tested: polished surface, corrosive atmosphere (sugar cane juice), low quality roughness (typical equivalent surface of the shaft cane mill) and the combined condition of the two last treatments. Fatigue tests were performed in rotating bending conditions and the values of fatigue strength for the different treatments were obtained. The decrease in fatigue strength due to the rough surface treatment was 1.53%, due to the corrosive environment was 14.9% and due to the high roughness and corrosive environment was 16.1%. The results were compared with those for SAE 1045 steel. SAE 4140 steel is more affected than SAE 1045 steel in the combined presence of high surface roughness and cane juice environment.
