The use of innovation in the health sector has spread widely in the past decades, with the objective of disseminating new knowledge for the managers of organizations that facilitate the generation of appropriate strategies to face the challenges that arise in the actual context regarding sustainability, accessibility and universal health coverage. In this article, a literature review was done on the topic of innovation in health which integrates the medical perspective with that other sciences with the purpose of identify consensus and divergence the conceptualization health innovation, identifying at contributes to the process that necessary for innovation development in health organizations and finally identifying research trends about health innovation. The main results show the need for a deeper understanding of the theoretical and empirical research in the identification of practices and tools that facilitate the implementation of innovation in the health sector in order to transform the sector into one which is dynamic, profitable and human center.
