Introduction: This study was aimed at the social representation of nurses in the clinic in critical patient care outside the intensive care and aims to identify the social representations of nurses in the care of critically ill patients in the medical clinic and discuss the implications of these representations in daily work. Materials and Methods: A qualitative study developed the Theory of Social Representations in a nursing service of a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro. We approached 30 nurses working in the medical clinic, through semistructured were analyzed using content analysis. Results: results in 297 registration units, distributed in 07 topics in 03 categories added: The presence of critically ill patients in the medical clinic, technologies and feelings to help care for critical patients. Discussion and Conclusions: We conclude that the social representation of this group is characterized by a lack of human and material resources and physical plant suitable for customer service in critical medical clinic.
