Introduction

Self-efficacy is defined as the individual's belief in their ability to control adverse events that may influence their life, and has been investigated in chronic disease management programs. Among the instruments that measure self-efficacy, the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale stands out. Thus, this systematic review aimed to identify in the literature the studies that used the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale as a tool for self-efficacy evaluation.

Materials and Methods

The search for articles was carried out in the databases Science Direct, PubMed, BIREME, LILACS, SCIELO and Google Scholar using as the descriptor Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale. The articles were manually searched, considering as inclusion criteria publications between the years 2001 and 2017; written in Portuguese, Spanish and English; with online access to the full text and studies that used the scale as a tool to assess self-efficacy.

Results

36 publications were found in the databases searched. Of these, 15 publications were selected according to inclusion criteria for this review.

Discussion

It is observed the use of the instrument in different contexts, such as investigating the prevalence of pain; evaluate and implement programs of self-management and self-management of CD; investigate self-care behaviors, among others. It is a scale used in various chronic diseases, translated into different languages and cultures, making it important in health care.

Conclusions

The studies indicate that the scale is an important and reliable instrument to evaluate the self-efficacy in the management of different chronic diseases.
