Resumen

ROCHA, Camilla Brasil et al. Feelings of women undergoing total mastectomy. Rev Cuid [online]. 2019, vol.10, n.1, e606.  Epub 04-Nov-2019. ISSN 2216-0973.  https://doi.org/10.15649/cuidarte.v10i1.606.

Introduction

Breast is a part of human body that is very important for women’s body image. When cancer appears, mastectomy is revealed as a fundamental procedure for its treatment. However, it has a negative impact on women. This study aims to describe the feelings of women with breast cancer who undergo a total mastectomy.

Materials and Methods

An exploratory descriptive study with a qualitative approach was conducted in a reference hospital for cancer treatment in Teresina, PI. Twelve women that were diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a total mastectomy participated in the study. Data analysis was made in stages: audio transcription, fluctuating reading of dialogues, textual excerpts in record units and category creation.

Results

12 participants were in the sample, characterized as women who declare themselves to be dark-skinned, married, low educated, catholic and housewives.

Discussion

Divergent feelings were observed regarding the mastectomy process and disease prognosis. It was verified that family, friends, supporters, faith and religious beliefs are key elements for women to feel safe and strong in the process of rebuilding their self-esteem.

Conclusions

It is essential to develop a relationship of trust and encouragement between nurses and the woman undergoing the mastectomy. For this, it will be necessary to create strategies whose focus moves away from the disease and its complications.
