TORRES G., Alba M.; PENA S., Enrique J.; ZUNIGA E., Orlando e PENA O., Julián A.. IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF ANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES ON CARBON IN PLANT BIOMASS STORAGE IN COLOMBIAN HIGH SIERRA ANDEAN ECOSYSTEMS. Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2012, vol.16, n.1, pp.132-142. ISSN 0123-3068.
The impact of anthropic activities on carbon storage in plant biomass was evaluated in intervened and non-intervened forests through the establishment of permanent plots in the moor and Andean high forests in the Colombian Chingaza National Natural Park and in the Snow-covered Mountais National Natural Park. . Carbon stored in plant biomass was measured directly in moor grasslands. Indirectly it was measured in forest biomass using calibrated equations (non-destructive methodology) and statistical regression equations were modeled to estimate indirectly the moor biomass. The results show that the most preserved high Andean forests have a higher carbon content which can be reduced drastically because of fragmentation and felling. Therefore, it is very important to maintain the high Andean forest in the most natural state possible, because this is the forest with the highest carbon reserve.
